More Myriam Updates

Myriam is doing very well in Xela. She has made friends with the family that she is staying with and apparently we have an open invitation there. They are a very modern family with computers, televisions, and many modern conveniences.  She is liking her teacher as well, although she is a little annoyed that they charged her for a full week of school despite the fact that there was no school on the 25th.

Also there has been a change in plans for Myriam. She will be coming home on new year's eve, that is, one week early. We are both very excited to be seeing each other again so soon! If all goes as planned we will be seeing each other at 11:30pm on new year's eve!  Although, now I have to work extra hard to complete my secret house project for when Myriam gets back.

So that's the short update. For those of you who were thinking that we couldn't be apart for 3 weeks… well…you were right. We have learned our lesson, and plan to travel together in South America soon (now that Myriam is a spanish speaker!).

Have a great new year to everyone!

myr update

hello all! happy almost end of 2006. here is my little update.

i met my family today. they seem really nice and totally ready to
talk to me in spanish and not exclude me at all. there are lots of
people in the house. gma and gpa, at least one son who has three
kids, the youngest of whom is almost 2, and another woman, i´m
guessing about my age, and i think she´s the daughter of the
grandparents too. i´m not totally sure. i make sure to mention
whenever i meet a group of people something about ¨mi esposo¨” so that
no one thinks i´m available for seduction!! i have my own room, which
i can lock when i leave. there is also an upstairs and then an
outside rooftop that is for drying clothes and a cool view. the dueña
seems very friendly and i am excited, and she said it´s not a problem
that i´m a vegetarian. that´s somewhat of a relief.
i also met my teacher for this short week. she is also nice, and
about half the lesson today was spent me talking about my wonderful
husband and then she wanted to see pics so it was off to the computer
and moldfarm and greenhodge and, of course, greenhen. SHE got all
teary eyed when i told her what a wonderful husband i have!!! it´s
cool to make someone ELSE teary eyed about him!!
i had my first “official” xmas dinner lastnight. a bunch of us at the
hostel made a yummy dinner and we finally were eating, at like 930 and
i asked is this an official xmas dinner? and everyone said yes. so
it was my first one. but it was vegetarian, which was awesome. i
think the food is finally gettingtomy stomach. it´s been very loud
all day. but apparently it´s normal to get parasites - so i´m not
worried. (that was for you, pa!)
hope yáll are doing well.
PAZ!!!

myriam in xela

So, it's spelled quetzaltenango, though people also spell it xela, but it's prounounced, "Shala". However you spell or prounouce it, Myriam is there. I got a phone call from her today. She has at least one friend (whose name is Dimple) who she is travelling with.  Her current plan is to stay at a hostel type of place with at least 3 other people from the mountain school until after christmas. She is feeling a little awkward going to a family's house for Christmas so she is going to stay in a hostel.  She is learning a lot of spanish. She is also one of the best spanish speakers in the school!  She will be in quetzaltenango for 2 more weeks living with a family

from Myriam email:

"we hike up to a waterfall today….it was an insane hike, and our guide had the machete out and using it every few minutes.  we had to walk acorss this wood plank that went over some land, like a super skinny bridge, and i cound{t do it!!!  i started to turn around to go back.  first, i took a step, and then i totally freaked out.  and then this guy named nate was like yuou{ll be okay, just relax.  and i tried like three steps and i coulndl{t do it.  but then they told me i could go around.  i DID manage to go across on the way back though.  b-c it was downhill on the way out, and that was way scarier for me than the uphill on the way back.  i felt really silly.  i think maybe i{m  abit afraid of heights.  anywsay, the hike was amazing and gorgeous and so green"

So that's the news!!  I'll let you know more when I know more!!

Myriam in Colomba, Guatemala

From Myriam's email:

i{m here! i made it, and i{ve been at the mountain school since sunday around lunch. getting here was a bit insane. i was on a chicken bus. it was suppposed to be like one hour and ended up being like 2 or 3, b-c we had to get gas and pick up the entire population of guatemala! it was really hot and sweaty, but relaly fun. we went to a natural medicine place. i went with this girl who is my favorite person here so far, and the bitch from oakland. i don{t know why she is abitch, b-c she doesn{t really have a reason to be. anywya, they have parasites so wanted to get their poop tested, and i just went along for the rid.e and i got to help translate b-c i am th ebest of the three. i{m actutally one of the best of most of the people here. there are three people from sweden here who lived here for a year, a year ago, and they{re

< good. but people keep asking me quetions, which iskind of cool. this internet place is < britney spears! can you believe that? it would drive me crazy, i had my frist day of class, and it was pretty good. my teacher admits he's a liar. we talked about vegetarianism. i ate chicken my first night. i told my teacher i'm allergic to shellfish and then later he told me how once he told a student that some food was octopus when really it was cow intestine. but he said he wouldn't do that to me, b-c i have a good reason. yeah, so i ate chicken. it was weird. and kind of gross. i just odn{t like chicken. but the soup-stew it was in was good. i{m keeping a record of what food i've been served in my journal for you. this morning it was stewed or cooked or something plantains and beans. yes, it is tortillas quite often. they are very yummy. my roommate is a friend of wes!!! how weird is that. she was the one at the masquerade with the dog whose knot you fixed! but the bitchy girl is the one who was holding the dog when you fixed it. remember that? she was like <<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>> i don{t know how to do caps - sorry. and she was bitchy? well, she's still bitchy. but my roommate isn't bitchy and likes to dumpster dive. so that's cool. oh, to get to this town i{m in, called colomba (i{m telling you so you can google earth it or whatever!) i take a pick up truck. it{s a pick up toyota usually with bars on the side, and they fit lots of people, and if there's no room, people stand on the bumnper and hang on, and it'sso super fun1!!! i love it! and the mother in the family i eat with told me my spanish is pretty good. the kids are cute. anywya, i rwote about them in my journal to yuou. i cannot spell well today. okay, not this is really long. i'm takin gpics for you, but i want to take more! i am trying.

Myriam en Guatamela

Hola amigos y familia! Just a quick note to let everyone know that Myriam is
safely in Guatemala. I will be sending periodic updates to everyone as I get
information. I will also me posting messages to http://blog.moldfarm.com.

Myriam is starting her first week of intensive Spanish classes at la escuela
de la montana “the mountain school”. They have limited phone access and
computer access, and electricity access, so we may not hear from myriam for
a few days. Next week she will be in Quetzaltenango (a 33 point scrabble
word!) which is also know as Xela (an 11 point word) for 2 more weeks of
intensive Spanish study.

I will let you all know more as information becomes available!

Adios!
